A wet room is a fully waterproofed bathroom where the shower area is open and level with the rest of the floor, rather than contained in a separate shower tray or cubicle. The entire room is tanked (sealed with a waterproof membrane) and the floor is graded to direct water towards a drain. Wet rooms are popular for their contemporary look, accessibility for people with reduced mobility, easier cleaning, and the impression of more space in smaller bathrooms.

Q: Do wet rooms need building regulations approval?

In most cases, a straightforward wet room conversion within an existing bathroom does not require building regulations approval. However, building regulations may apply if: You are creating a wet room in a space that was not previously a bathroom Structural changes are needed to the floor to create the required gradient New drainage is being installed Electrical work is being carried out (must be done by a qualified electrician or certified under a Competent Person scheme) Ambient Bathrooms will advise on whether building control notification is needed for your specific project.

Q: Can you install a wet room on a timber floor?

Yes. Wet rooms can be installed on both timber and concrete subfloors. Timber floors require additional preparation to ensure they are rigid enough and properly tanked to prevent water penetration. Ambient Bathrooms uses specialist tanking membranes designed for timber floor applications.

Q: Is underfloor heating worth having in a wet room?

Underfloor heating is a popular addition to wet rooms. It provides consistent warmth underfoot, helps the floor dry faster after use, and eliminates the need for a radiator or towel rail taking up wall space. The running costs are relatively low, particularly with an electric mat system under tiles. Ambient Bathrooms installs underfloor heating as part of their wet room service.

Q: What is an unvented hot water cylinder?

An unvented hot water cylinder is a pressurised hot water system that is connected directly to the mains water supply, rather than being fed by a cold water tank in the loft. This means it delivers hot water at mains pressure to all outlets in the home simultaneously. Unvented cylinders are particularly beneficial in homes with multiple bathrooms, as they maintain strong water pressure even when several taps or showers are running at the same time.

Q: Do you need special qualifications to install an unvented cylinder?

Yes. UK law requires that anyone installing an unvented hot water system holds a BPEC G3 qualification. This ensures the installer understands the safety requirements for pressurised systems, including the correct fitting of safety valves and expansion vessels. Ambient Bathrooms is BPEC G3 certified and legally authorised to install and service unvented hot water systems.

Q: How often does an unvented cylinder need servicing?

Unvented hot water cylinders should be serviced annually by a qualified engineer. Regular servicing checks the safety valves, expansion vessel pressure, and overall system condition. Keeping up with annual servicing is also typically a requirement of your home insurance and the manufacturer’s warranty. Ambient Bathrooms offers annual servicing for all unvented cylinder installations.

Q: Do I need planning permission for a new bathroom?

In the vast majority of cases, you do not need planning permission to install or refurbish a bathroom within your existing home. Bathroom work is normally considered a permitted development. However, if you live in a listed building or a conservation area, you may need listed building consent or additional approvals for certain changes. Ambient Bathrooms can advise on whether your project is likely to require any permissions.

Q: When do building regulations apply to bathroom work?

Building regulations may apply to your bathroom project if: You are creating a new bathroom or en-suite where one did not previously exist You are making structural alterations such as removing a wall New drainage is being installed or existing drainage is being significantly altered Electrical work is being carried out (covered under Part P of the Building Regulations) An unvented hot water cylinder is being installed (covered under Part G) Ambient Bathrooms ensures all relevant building regulations are met. Electrical work is carried out by qualified electricians, and unvented cylinder installations are completed by BPEC G3 certified engineers.

Q: Do I need a building regulations certificate for my bathroom?

If your bathroom work involves notifiable electrical work or an unvented cylinder installation, you should receive a building regulations compliance certificate. For electrical work completed by an installer registered with a Competent Person scheme, the certificate is issued directly by the scheme. For unvented cylinders, the G3 qualified installer will notify building control. Ambient Bathrooms handles all necessary notifications and certification as part of their service.
